Digressions of a ‘Misfits’ fan

I know this is a change from my usual blog posts, but with the upcoming series due to air I thought it was appropriate….

After hearing the news that Misfits has been purchased by a US cable company for syndicate and the annoucement of three new characters, I have recently been rewatching the show (the joys of box-sets) and found myself thinking on a number of occassions ‘ahhhh I forgot about that’ or ‘that makes sense’, which, is really a testament to the intricate and well-thought out writing/plot of the programme. For example, I completely forgot that Simon mentions he has a younger sister, which could make for an interesting new character if the show is still airing in a few years. Another moment that skipped my mind, was that when the misfits take drugs their powers reverse, which would be entertaining to say the least, to see the effect of this on their new powers and the upcoming new charcters. Finally, after rewatching seasons 1 and 2 there are numerous hints that Nathan’s power is immortality and that Simon is superhoodie, so many that I was like ‘HOW DID I NOT REALISE THIS?!’, which in turn is simply part of what makes ‘Misfits’ one of the best Brittish shows to emerge in the last few years, the fact that after multiple viewings it can still suprise and interpellate spectators.

Postmodern Photography: The shining and signifying psychological horror

This is a shot from a while back that was part of a promotional campaign for a media coursework brief for a ‘new television show’, the brief dennoting it was a psychological horror, the promotional images made inherent intertextual links to Stanley Kubricks film ‘The Shining’. Henceforth drawing on established audience schema, through the positioning of the camera, facial expression of the model and use of blood acting as signifiers, equating the troubled protagonist and show with the psychological horror genre.

Extortion Photography series: Part 3

Part 3 of a set of photographs taken a few years ago that made up promotional material for a television pitch for a show called ‘Extortion’, about a woman who fakes her death in order to escape her past. The photography aims to create an enigma playing on the notion of gender performance and can be viewed as a commentary on how patriarchial society mythologies woman. In this set I used a various color filters/washes to connote the protagonists gritty flashbacks to her past and wanted to intone the almost nightmarish surreal contested space the protagonist occupies for the majority of the show. For example the use of the purple color filter acting as a intertextual reference to the type used in Hitchcocks vertigo to connote the protagonists inner turmoil.

The rustic portrait

For this photo, I really wanted to invoke the idea of times forgotten, the past and an almost melancholic nostalgia. Theres definately a vulnerability to the potrait, in which, the key to capturing this was the positioning and direction of the person in question. The smokey almost rustic quality achieved through the slight blurring of the photo and the brown hue I used really empahsised the structure of the face being shot  

Busy life’s: Photography series

These images were originally part of the active lifestyle campaign made up of a website, that attempted to encourage the youth orientated teen audience to paticipate in a more healthy lifestyle. On both photos I used a slightly blue hue and color filter. In the first one we aimed to capture a car passing, the blurr connoting the stress of everyday life and the walking shot, was shot near a beautiful enclave of trees and forest in the north west, the signpost adding something extra.

Time and perception photography series

For this set of photographs, I wanted to invoke notions of time, perception, nostalgia and sadness. For some reason Charles Dickens ‘Great Expectations’ comes to mind, a novel in which the above themes are heavily prevalent. On some of the photos I used a blue/green colour filter and in others used specialised lighting to create shadows and illuminate the clocks face.

 

Dilapidated urban fashion photography series

For this set of photos I was lucky enough to have good weather and an interesting location, since the theme of the shoot was dilapidated and urban again targeting a youth orientated audience, I choose a graffiti filled, garage enclave surrounded and protected by trees which provided the shadows and lighting, which was surprisingly a beautiful location. For some of the photos, I used a blue hue filter.
